Absorption and Density for Saint Lucia’s Wet Climate

Saint Lucia does not test paving with frost. It tests paving with water, which makes absorption and density the two numbers worth reading before anything else on a datasheet, and the reason limestone paving for Saint Lucia gets specified differently from a northern order.   • Density reported next to absorption, since a dense stone with moderate porosity often beats a light stone with a flattering number.

Saturation Weight and the Bed Below

The Atlantic coast and the Caribbean coast set different problems, and a single blanket specification rarely serves both well.

  • Windward frontage near Dennery or Micoud takes driven rain and salt spray together, so low porosity is doing two jobs at once.
  • Leeward sites around Castries, Gros Islet and Rodney Bay see calmer water but longer spells of standing damp in shaded corners.
  • Hillside and interior sites carry the runoff of everything above them, so joints and restraint matter as much as the slab itself.

  • Calibration tolerance, since inconsistent thickness quietly costs bedding time on site.
  • A small hand sample you can soak, tilt and stand on before committing to a container.
