Stand at a pool edge and the stone beneath you is working three jobs at once: draining the splash, gripping wet skin, and staying cool enough to cross at noon. Ocean Reef Shellstone in the coarse 24-grit brush was shaped for all three — by the sea first, and by our brushing line second.

A Beach, Turned to Stone

This is reef rubble made permanent. Whole shells, broken shells, coral skeletons, and the fine debris of an ancient shoreline lie cemented into pale ivory rock, and our saws simply cut the story open again. The marine content is not a printed face: split any piece and the shells continue clean through the body, which is why worn shellstone never “wears off” — there is nothing underneath but more of the same sea.

The Honest Surface

Look closely and you’ll find small natural voids scattered through the face, left where softer material once sat among the shells. Treat them as equipment, not flaws: outdoors they let splash drain through the texture rather than pond on it, they add bite underfoot, and they are the signature that separates real reef stone from lookalike porcelain. Never let an installer fill them with rigid grout — the stone breathes through them.

What the Coarse Brush Adds

Shellstone arrives at the brushing line already textured — the sea saw to that — and the 24-grit pass deepens the plot. The coarse abrasive cuts the softer ground back so the harder shell edges sit a little prouder, then rounds everything it has raised, leaving the deepest grip we produce in this stone with nothing sharp anywhere a foot can land. Where a calmer surface suits — dining terraces, interiors — the finer 60-grit brush carries the same shells with a softer hand.

The pale ivory face returns most sunlight before it can become heat, and the stone’s open structure releases what little it absorbs — the physics behind a deck you cross barefoot at midday without the hop-and-wince walk.

Living With Pool Water

Chlorine splash asks only for the basics: rinse it away, keep acidic cleaners off the stone, and let the sealer do its work. Salt-chlorinated systems ask for one habit more — as splash dries it leaves salt behind, and in any porous stone those crystals can slowly stress the surface, so hose coping and splash zones down with fresh water from time to time. In both cases the right protection is a breathable penetrating sealer, renewed sooner in splash areas: it slows liquids going in while letting vapor escape, which is exactly what a living, porous stone beside water needs.

Choose Your Edge

Coping is where a pool shows its intentions, and we cut three answers. Bullnose — a fully rounded edge — is the barefoot classic, kindest to swimmers’ hands on the way out. Eased and pencil-round profiles hold a crisper architectural line for contemporary pools. Drop-face (rebated) coping hangs a square apron over the waterline, hiding the pool shell and casting a clean shadow along the water. Matching step treads complete the set, all from the same stone.

Commercial projects receive this production run’s own ASTM results with their quote on request; we put the current batch’s numbers on paper rather than repeating a brochure figure.
