Is Ocean Reef Shellstone suitable for pool decks?

Yes — brushed shellstone is a classic pool-deck stone. Its light ivory tone reflects heat so the surface stays comfortable barefoot, and matching coping and bullnose pieces can be cut from the same stone. For pool decks and surrounds we recommend a coarse grit, which we also cut in this stone. Seal it on installation and it handles pool-side life well.

Does shellstone stay cool underfoot in the sun?

Yes — staying cool is shellstone's signature trait. The pale ivory-to-sand color reflects sunlight rather than storing it, and the stone's naturally open structure sheds heat faster than dense dark paving, so a shellstone deck remains comfortable for bare feet on hot afternoons when charcoal stone or concrete would be uncomfortable.

Is the brushed 60-grit finish slippery when wet?

The 60-grit brush leaves a matte, lightly textured face, with a rougher surface than honed or polished stone. Brushed is a popular choice for pool decks and surrounds; for these areas we recommend a coarse grit, which we also cut in this stone. Any paving can be slippery when wet. Finish, slope, drainage, sealer and footwear all play a part, so ask your designer to confirm local pool-deck and code requirements.

Does Ocean Reef Shellstone need to be sealed?

Yes. Shell-rich limestone is naturally more porous than dense stone — the open structure that keeps it cool also absorbs moisture — so apply a breathable penetrating sealer at installation and reseal periodically, more often around pools and outdoor kitchens. Sealed and maintained, the stone resists staining and weathers gracefully; left unsealed, spills and pool chemicals mark it faster.

What is the difference between the brushed 60-grit and polished shellstone?

Both start from the same shell-rich stone. Polishing closes the face into a smooth, light-reflecting surface suited to refined interiors, while the 60-grit brush leaves a soft matte texture and a more relaxed, natural character. Coarser grit levels are also available, and they are the grit we recommend for pool decks and open outdoor paving.

Can shellstone be used in cold or freezing climates?

Shellstone performs best in warm and temperate regions — its porous structure means hard-freeze climates demand careful detailing: proper drainage, a well-draining bedding, and consistent sealing. If your site sees regular freeze–thaw cycles, ask us about our black basalt for exposed areas.

Bedding: full-bed sand and cement mix or a flexible adhesive appropriate to the substrate.
Joints: from 3 mm for sawn tiles; wider for split-face setts and cobbles.
Sealing: a quality impregnating sealer is recommended for limestone and shellstone; basalt and granite typically need none.
Cutting: wet saw with a diamond blade.

This stone formed on an ancient seabed, and it shows: densely packed shell fragments, coral traces, and marine fossils run through the full body of the stone, not just across its face. The tone sits between ivory and soft sand, and small natural voids give the surface its reef-like character — every tile and paver carries a different arrangement of shells, so a finished deck reads unmistakably as natural stone. Shell-rich limestone is naturally more porous than dense stone like basalt — that open structure is part of why it stays cool underfoot, and it is also why sealing matters. Seal on installation with a breathable penetrating sealer, reseal periodically, and keep acidic cleaners (vinegar, citrus, harsh pool chemicals splashed and left) off the surface, wiping spills promptly. Drainage, bedding, and sealing determine how any porous stone winters. Our certified mill test on one production batch measured water absorption of 1.34% and density of 2.49 g/cm³.
