The Wet Room Brief in a Hot Climate
Bathrooms in the Virgin Islands work harder than their mainland equivalents. They are used by people coming in from a beach or a pool, they sit in air that rarely dries out completely, and in many houses they are ventilated by a louvered window rather than an extractor running all day. Stone handles that duty well, provided the detailing behind it is right. The failures usually blamed on stone in wet areas are almost always failures of fall, waterproofing or threshold detail, and every one of them is avoidable at drawing stage. That is worth saying plainly, because the material tends to take the blame for workmanship it had no part in. Decide the wet area build-up before the stone is even chosen and most of the risk disappears.
Falls, Drains and What Sits Underneath
The tile is the last layer, and it can only ever be as good as what it sits on.
- Form the fall in the screed rather than by tapering the adhesive bed.
- Take the waterproofing membrane up the walls and across the threshold zone.
- Use full, voidless bedding so no cavity beneath the stone can hold water.
- Confirm the drain position against the tile layout before anything is fixed.
Between them, those four points prevent the large majority of what goes wrong in the years that follow.
Choosing the Tile for a Shower Floor
A shower floor is the most demanding piece of stone in a house. It is wet daily, it meets soap and sunscreen, and it is walked on barefoot at the least stable moment of the day. Smaller units with more joints give grip and allow the fall to be formed accurately. A brushed or lightly textured face is the right register, with enough tooth to be safe but not so open that soap residue lodges in it. Agreeing tile thickness for shower floors with the fixer early avoids awkward level differences at the entry point. Ask for the absorption figure on the batch as well, since a dense stone in a shower simply behaves better over a decade of daily use than a thirsty one dressed up with sealer.
Thresholds Fail First
If a wet room is going to leak, it will usually leak at the threshold.
- Use a single full-width piece rather than jointed cuts across the opening.
- Set it slightly proud on the dry side so water is turned back.
- Seal the perimeter with a flexible joint, never with rigid grout alone.
- Carry the membrane under and beyond the threshold on both sides.
- Keep the door swing clear of any standing water path.
Vanity Tops, Sills and Small Pieces
The same stone used on the floor can run up into the vanity top, the window sill and the shower bench, which is one of the quiet pleasures of building in natural material rather than a manufactured one.
- Keep edge details simple, because a small radius or a light chamfer outlives a delicate profile.
- Seal the cutout on every face wherever a basin is undermounted.
- Specify a denser piece with a slight outward fall for sills in louvered openings.
- Order bench and sill pieces from the same batch so the tone matches the floor.
- Allow spare material for small pieces, which are the ones most often damaged in handling.
Consider white limestone in bathroom sizes where you want the room bright without resorting to gloss, and let the finish rather than the tone do the work of keeping it calm.
Grout, Movement and Salt-Laden Air
Joints are where a bathroom shows its age first.
- Choose a grout rated for wet areas and mix it consistently across the whole room.
- Keep joint widths even, because irregular joints read as sloppy work under bright light.
- Provide movement joints at internal corners and where the floor meets the wall.
- Expect salt-laden air to reach bathrooms through louvers, so rinse surfaces occasionally.
Water Is Scarce, and That Shapes Fittings
Households here rely heavily on rainwater collected from roofs into cisterns, supported by desalination on Tortola. That shapes bathrooms in practical ways: efficient fittings are normal rather than virtuous, showers tend to be short, and pumped pressure is not always generous. A stone floor with an accurate fall drains completely under a modest flow, which matters a great deal more when the flow is modest by design. It is also worth remembering that the cleaning routine should stay mild, both for the stone and for the water system it eventually reaches. Acidic bathroom products are the usual culprits in an etched limestone floor, and in a house that collects its own water there is a second reason to leave them on the shelf.
Build the Mock-Up
Before the bathrooms are tiled, build a small mock-up of the shower corner: substrate, membrane, fall, tile, threshold piece and grout. Pour water on it and watch where it goes. That half day tells you more than any specification document, and it gives the locally registered architect or surveyor on the job something to sign off with real confidence. Every trade that follows will work to what they saw in that corner. Detail the wet areas properly and a stone bathroom will still look right long after the fittings have been replaced.
