Your size. Your thickness. Your finish, confirmed for this stone.

We cut this stone to the dimensions and thickness your project calls for. Brushed is our signature finish, from a coarse 16 grit to a fine 80, or finer to order. Most of our limestone and basalt can also be supplied sawn, honed or bush-hammered; polished, tumbled and split-face are made on selected stones. Tell us the size, thickness, finish and use, and we’ll confirm what this stone can be made in. Looking for another color? See the full collection.

Planning a laying pattern? See which of our formats suit herringbone, French pattern, running bond, stack bond, basketweave and fan layouts in our paver laying patterns guide.

Ships by pallet or container to any US state · Lead time quoted per order

  • Floors, patios & terraces
  • External use (from 20 mm thickness)
  • Walls, cladding & facades
  • Pool surrounds & wet areas
  • Driveways (30 mm+ setts and pavers)
  • Steps, copings & edging

Suitability varies with size, thickness, finish, and substrate. Tell us your application when you request a quote and we will confirm the right specification for it.

Bedding: full-bed sand and cement mix or a flexible adhesive appropriate to the substrate.
Joints: from 3 mm for sawn tiles; wider for split-face setts and cobbles.
Sealing: a quality impregnating sealer is recommended for limestone and shellstone; basalt and granite typically need none.
Cutting: wet saw with a diamond blade.

Installation requirements differ by stone and format — a product-specific method note is included with every quote, and our team is available for your installer’s technical questions.

Pricing improves materially with quantity: pallet rates beat per-piece pricing, and full-container rates beat both. Every quote is calculated quarry-direct, with no distributor margin in between.

Distributors, stone yards, and retailers: our Trade & Wholesale Program covers container-load pricing, recurring supply schedules, and private-label production.

Orders ship by pallet or full container to any US state, with kerbside delivery to the nearest safe access point. Lead times depend on stone, finish, and quantity, and are confirmed with your quote. Samples reach any US address within five working days.

Every crate is inspected and photographed before dispatch — if anything is wrong on arrival, contact us and we will make it right.

Nero Stellato Black Basalt Cobblestones — Any Finish, Any Size

These cobblestones are cut from the same dense volcanic basalt as our Nero Stellato tiles: a deep charcoal-black stone with fine, bright mineral flecks. The standard piece is 8″ × 4″ × 4″ (20 × 10 × 10 cm), a full-depth cobblestone for driveways, courtyards, and paths. Any finish and any size is cut to order.

Black, Charcoal, and the Flecks

The color you see depends on the finish and the weather. Smooth finishes, such as sawn and honed, look darkest. Textured finishes, such as split-face and bush-hammered, scatter light and look charcoal grey when dry. Every finish turns close to black in rain. For a black look all year, a color-enhancing impregnating sealer holds the stone near its wet tone. This is purely cosmetic, because basalt absorbs almost no water. The bright flecks show most clearly on sawn, honed, and brushed faces.

Choose the Finish by the Job

Our stone finishes page shows each finish up close. For cobblestones, the main choices are:

Split-face: a naturally broken top with a rugged, traditional look and strong grip. The classic driveway cobblestone.
Bush-hammered: an even, pitted texture with high grip, good for slopes and ramps.
Brushed: a matte texture set by the grit you pick, from a coarse 16 grit for maximum grip to a fine 80 grit for a smoother walk.
Sawn: a flat top with crisp edges and the darkest, most modern look. Best on level ground.
Honed: a smooth satin face for covered areas and level paths.
Antique: a softened, aged surface for traditional and rustic settings.

Any edge can be eased (slightly rounded) to reduce chipping.

Driveways and Winter

At 4 inches (10 cm) deep, these cobblestones are a standard driveway format. Under vehicle areas, use a compacted crushed-stone base 6–8 inches deep, with 8 inches as the minimum for driveways, laid over geotextile and held by edge restraints. Your installer confirms the bedding and joints for your soil and traffic. Basalt absorbs almost no water, so frost has very little to work on, and its dense structure handles de-icing salt far better than porous paving. Rinse the salt off in spring. If you plow, raise the blade slightly or fit a rubber or poly cutting edge so it rides over the stones. See why basalt suits cold climates.

Laying and Quantities

Herringbone is the pattern to use where cars turn, because the pieces interlock. For the traditional European fan or arc pattern, order smaller cubes cut to size. At the standard size, plan about 4.5 cobblestones per square foot (about 50 per m²) laid tight, plus 5–10% for cuts and breakage. Mix cobblestones from several crates as you lay so the flecks spread evenly.

Heat

Dark stone absorbs sunlight, and a black cobblestone surface gets hot in full summer sun. On a driveway this rarely matters. For pool surrounds and other barefoot areas, choose a pale stone, which stays much cooler, and use Nero Stellato for the driveway, borders, and shaded paths.

Care

Sweep and rinse as needed, and use a pH-neutral cleaner for deeper cleaning. No protective sealer is needed. An enhancing sealer is optional if you want the permanent wet-black look.

Sizes and Ordering

Every size and thickness is cut to order: cobblestones, cubes for fan patterns, edging, and matching pavers and tiles in the same stone. Nero Stellato is quarried in the Middle East, quarry-direct and hand-selected, and ships by pallet or container to any US state and worldwide. Order free samples of two or three finishes and compare them side by side, wet and dry.
