Why the absorption number matters on this island
Bermuda sits in the open North Atlantic rather than the tropics, and its weather behaves accordingly. Summers are long and warm, but winters are genuinely cool and damp, and a shaded terrace can go days without drying out fully between rain bands. Paving here is not being asked to sit under constant heat. It is being asked to take up water, hold it through a mild wet spell, and give it back cleanly. Absorption and density are the two figures that predict how a limestone behaves in that cycle, which is why they belong at the front of a specification rather than in a footnote.
What the soak and weigh figure actually tells you
Absorption is a measurement, not an adjective. A sample is dried to a constant weight and weighed, soaked for a fixed period, then weighed again; the gain, expressed as a percentage of the dry weight, is the absorption figure. Density is its companion, and the two move together, because a tighter grain leaves less pore volume for water to occupy. A low-absorption stone takes on less water during a storm, weighs less when saturated and dries faster once the sky clears. A higher figure is not a fault. It is a placement instruction: the more absorbent unit wants a drier, better drained, better ventilated position, and it can do fine work in one.
Winter wetting, summer drying, and the gap between
The specification problem here is cycling rather than constancy. Bermuda runs four real seasons, and low winter temperatures slow evaporation at exactly the point when rainfall is most persistent. That changes the brief in ways worth mapping before you order:
- North-facing and tree-shaded terraces dry slowest, and deserve the tighter-grained end of the range.
- Open, wind-crossed decks shed moisture quickly and can carry a more open stone comfortably.
- Paving laid tight against planting beds stays damp long after the rest of the terrace has dried.
- Salt carried on Atlantic air concentrates in the pores as water leaves, so drying behavior matters as much as wetting.
- Storm exposure is periodic rather than constant, and saturated paving is heavier paving when wind gets under a loose unit.
Density, thickness and the load above
Density earns its keep in combination with thickness, never on its own. A dense unit cut too thin still fails over a poor bed, and a heavy section in a sheltered position is money spent where nobody will ever see it. The conventions worth holding in your head are short:
- 2 cm for interior floors and covered areas that carry foot traffic only.
- 3 cm as the standard exterior section for terraces, paths and pool surrounds.
- 5 cm and above anywhere vehicles run, turn or stand.
- Consistent calibration across the pallet, which decides how fast a setter can lay a true plane.
Sealers, cleaners and the water tank
Bermuda has no rivers, streams or freshwater lakes. Domestic water arrives off the roof: rain falls on white stepped limestone, the porosity of that stone filters it on the way down, and it is held in a tank whose capacity is regulated against the roof area serving it. That system makes a paving decision a water decision as well. Anything brushed, sprayed or poured onto ground-level stone, whether sealer, degreaser, acid wash or general patio cleaner, has to be kept clear of whatever feeds the tank, and terrace falls belong on the drawings rather than in a conversation after the first heavy rain. Reading a test report before you order
Ask for the data in writing and read it against your own site. A short set of checks covers most of what goes wrong later:
- Confirm the absorption figure belongs to the same stone and the same finish you are buying.
- Check whether density is quoted dry or saturated, because the two numbers describe different days.
- Ask for breaking or flexural strength when paving will span pedestals or sit on a structural deck.
- Establish which face was tested, since surface treatment changes what the reading means.
- Keep the report in the job file so a future contractor knows what was specified and why.
Getting the pallets into the parish

Confirm the sailing at booking, since carrier schedules move. The last leg deserves as much planning as the sea leg:
- Roads are narrow and vehicle sizes are limited, so stone arrives on smaller trucks than a mainland site expects.
- Staged drops usually beat one large consignment where access is tight.
- Estate work, Hamilton commercial sites and older parish lanes each ask a different question of the truck.
- Book the offload window before the container sails rather than after it lands.
