Whenever weather votes. Sloped paths, rain-walked routes, splash zones beside water features, steps, and any exterior that stays wet for days at a time — that's this coarse brush's territory, where its pronounced tooth earns the choice. For barefoot terraces and interiors, its finer 60-grit sibling is the more comfortable answer.

How does basalt handle frost and de-icing winters?

This is basalt's home ground. Volcanic stone carries near-zero absorption, so there's almost no water inside it for frost to work on — the failure mode that troubles porous paving simply lacks material here. Give it sound, well-drained bedding and it winters decade after decade; it's the stone our limestone pages point hard-freeze buyers toward.

Does it get hot in the sun?

Yes — dark stone banks heat, and we won't pretend otherwise. In full summer sun a charcoal surface runs hot enough that bare feet will notice, so plan shade over lounging zones, or route barefoot-critical areas — pool decks especially — to our pale limestones and keep Nero Stellato for the paths, borders, and shaded runs.

Why does the surface sparkle in low sun?

Raking light is this grade's party trick. The coarse texture throws micro-shadow across the face while the crystalline flecks catch the low sun and return it — so at morning and evening the surface goes rugged and glittering at once. The finer 60-grit shows the same starfield more quietly; this grade performs it.

What maintenance does it actually need?

Less than almost anything else you could pave with. Sweep it, rinse it, give it an occasional pH-neutral wash, and that's the program — basalt's near-zero absorption means sealing is optional and cosmetic, never a protective necessity. No resealing calendar, no acid anxiety, no fuss: volcanic stone was finished by the volcano.

Will every piece carry the same amount of speckle?

No, and treat that as the feature it is. The crystal flecks are set by the lava that made the stone, so density drifts piece to piece — some tiles busy, some calm. Open several crates, dry-lay, and mix as you fix: spread across a path, the drift becomes a sky instead of a mismatch.

Bedding: full-bed sand and cement mix or a flexible adhesive appropriate to the substrate.
Joints: from 3 mm for sawn tiles; wider for split-face setts and cobbles.
Sealing: a quality impregnating sealer is recommended for limestone and shellstone; basalt and granite typically need none.
Cutting: wet saw with a diamond blade.

Volcanic basalt was made by harsher conditions than any winter will ever supply, and Nero Stellato in the coarse 24-grit brush is that permanence dressed for daily weather: the grade of our starry black built to be rained on.

Stone With a Temper Behind It

Nero Stellato begins as dense volcanic rock, its deep charcoal body seeded with fine crystalline flecks that formed in the melt — the starfield the name reports. Fleck density is set by geology and wanders piece to piece, so the working rule applies here as everywhere in our figured stones: open several crates, dry-lay, and distribute the busy and the calm across the whole area.

What the Coarse Brush Does Here

A 24-grit abrasive brush drags real tooth into the face — a pronounced, fully matte texture that wet shoes and wet feet can trust — and it changes how the starfield performs. Deeper texture throws more micro-shadow, so the surface reads slightly more rugged, and under raking morning or evening light the crystal flecks catch and flare against that shadow: the same sky, played louder. For barefoot comfort and composed interiors, its finer 60-grit sibling is the gentler instrument.

Sweep, hose, and occasionally wash with a pH-neutral cleaner; that’s all of it. Nothing soaks into basalt, so sealing is optional and purely cosmetic — a color-enhancing impregnating sealer deepens the charcoal toward wet-look black if you want the drama held permanently, and skipping it costs the stone nothing.
