Some product names are marketing. This one is a report: nero stellato means starry black, and that is precisely what the stone does — a deep charcoal ground scattered with fine, bright crystalline flecks, each tile its own patch of night sky. This is our darkest stone, dense volcanic basalt, in the grade we consider its most complete: the refined 60-grit brush.

The Starfield

The flecks are crystalline minerals set into the rock when it was still lava, which is why they behave like stars and not like a pattern: irregular, generous, and never arranged the same way twice. Density drifts naturally from piece to piece — some tiles arrive busy with light, others calm — so open several crates, dry-lay a section, and mix as you fix; spread across a floor, the drift composes into sky.

The Refined Grade

A fine 60-grit brush takes the sawn face and works it into a smooth, even matte with a gentle hold — enough texture that shoes and bare feet trust it, little enough that the surface stays composed rather than rugged. This is the grade for living on: patios and terraces where people linger, interior floors, stair runs, and feature walls where the charcoal field should look deliberate. Where slopes, splash, and standing weather set the terms, its coarse 24-grit sibling takes over.

Where Brushed Sits on the Basalt Wall

We finish basalt many ways, and brushed is the middle voice. Honed basalt runs smoother and more satin — the quietest surface we make. Bush-hammered goes the other way entirely, cratered for maximum industrial grip. The 60-grit brush lands between them: tactile but civilized, which is exactly why it carries the named premium line.

Charcoal, and How to Deepen It

Color honesty: a brushed matte reads deep charcoal, not glossy jet — matte surfaces lighten dark stone a shade. If you want the field darker, a color-enhancing impregnating sealer pushes it toward wet-look black, and on basalt that choice is purely cosmetic: this stone’s near-zero absorption means no sealer is ever needed for protection. Enhance it or leave it natural; both are correct.

Care Without a Calendar

Sweep, rinse, and give it an occasional pH-neutral wash — that is the whole program. Nothing soaks in, so nothing stains through; there is no resealing schedule to keep and no acid anxiety to manage. And in frost country, basalt is the stone the rest of our catalog defers to: with sound, well-drained bedding it winters without complaint, year after year.
