Start at the drain, not the door
A wet room is a drainage detail with tile on top of it. Fix the position of the outlet first, then the falls that feed it, then the module that suits those falls, and only after all of that the face. Working the other way round, choosing a beautiful tile and asking an installer to make water travel across it to a drain, is how a bathroom ends up with a puddle in one corner and a threshold that quietly wets the hall carpet for a year.
Falls, formats and how the cutting works
A floor that falls to a single point cannot stay flat, and every tile crossing that fall has to twist slightly or be cut to follow it. Small modules absorb a fall almost invisibly; large modules fight it and need either a linear drain or a plane that tips in one direction only. Buyers who want stone floors detailed around drainage falls should settle this before ordering, because the drain type effectively dictates the module:
- Center point drain: small modules or mosaic within the falling zone
- Linear drain at one wall: a single plane, so larger modules can work
- Wall-to-wall gradient: check the fall against the door threshold height
- Any drain at all: confirm the outlet position on site before tile is cut
Thresholds and the change of level
The threshold is where two build-ups meet, and it does three jobs at once: it turns water back, it manages a difference in finished level, and it makes a visual break between floors. A single piece of stone cut to run the full width of the opening, with no joint anywhere in it, does all three better than several units butted together.
- Run the threshold in one length wherever the opening allows it
- Set it slightly proud of the wet floor so that water is turned back
- Match the tone to the room it belongs to rather than splitting the difference
- Ease or round the edge if bare feet cross it several times a day
Finish for a barefoot wet floor
A shower tray and a bathroom floor are not the same problem. The tray is wet under standing conditions with soap in the water, and it deserves a worked face plus a joint pattern that gives feet something to key into. The floor outside the tray sees splashes and wet prints, and a face chosen for tray duty spread across the whole room usually proves unpleasant to walk on dry and slower to clean. Different zones, different faces, one stone through the room so the space still reads as a whole.
Tanking and what sits under the tile
Everything that keeps a wet room from failing sits under the visible surface, which is precisely the part clients see least and pay for most reluctantly:
- A continuous waterproofing layer carried up the walls, not stopped at the tile line
- Corners, pipe penetrations and the drain flange detailed as part of that layer
- Falls formed in the screed rather than built up in adhesive
- Full bedding under every tile, since voids in a wet floor hold water
- Movement provision at perimeters and at any change of substrate
Grout, movement and the joints that fail first
Joints fail long before tiles do. In a room wet daily, sitting through cool damp months when very little dries quickly, the grout specification matters as much as the stone above it. Use a grout rated for continuous wetting, keep the joint width consistent with the tolerance of the lot rather than fighting it, and put a flexible sealant instead of rigid grout into every internal corner and every junction with a wall or a tray, because those are the lines that move and those are the lines that crack.
Ventilation and the months when nothing dries
Bathrooms here have to work through a genuinely cool damp part of the year as well as a humid summer, and that changes what a wet room asks for. When outside air is cool and moist, a bathroom that vents into it does not clear as quickly as a warm-climate assumption would suggest, and surfaces stay wet for longer after every use. Stone itself handles the damp without complaint, but the room around it needs help: extraction that actually runs long enough after the shower stops, a door undercut or vent that lets replacement air in, and a squeegee or towel habit on the tray. A wet room that never fully dries between uses will show it first in the joints and in the corners, not in the tile.
Samples, sequencing and the order
Wet-room stone is worth handling before it is bought, and the sequence of a build rewards deciding early rather than at the last comfortable moment:
- Get the tile decided before the screed is laid, so falls suit the module
- Confirm the drain type and position with the installer, in writing
- Order thresholds as single pieces with the main lot, cut to the opening
- Hold spares from the same lot for repairs after a leak or a later refit
- Check the finish against the room’s real light, not against a screen
It costs almost nothing to wet a sample before you decide, and a wet hand on two faces settles an argument that photographs never will. Detail the water first and the bathroom floor takes care of itself.
