The 24-grit brush is the finish that lets that history do practical work — a coarse abrasive pass that turns the fossil pattern itself into grip.

A Seabed, Read in Relief

The base tone drifts from light beige toward cream, and scattered through it sit the bioclasts — shell edges, coral traces, the small hard debris of a living sea floor. No printing process repeats like this, because nothing repeats: each tile carries its own arrangement, its own density of fossils, its own quiet story. Suppliers often classify the stone as dolomitic, a denser and harder chemistry than ordinary calcitic limestone, which is part of why this beige stone wears so stubbornly well underfoot.

What the 24-Grit Brush Does to Fossil Stone

Coarse brushing exploits a fact about this stone: the fossils are harder than the matrix that holds them. As the 24-grit head scours the face, it cuts the softer beige ground faster than the shell and coral inclusions, so the fossils emerge in slight relief and the whole surface becomes a low, rounded topography — deeply matte, firmly textured, and mapped by the stone’s own biology. Because abrasion rounds whatever it raises, the result grips wet feet without rasping bare ones. It is the most tactile grade we cut in this stone; the gentler 60-grit brush is there when you want the same fossils with a softer hand.

Laying Large Format, Done Right

The most requested format is 12 × 24 in (305 × 610 mm), and rectangles that size reward one installer’s rule: offset rows by a third, not a half. Natural stone carries slight thickness variation, and a one-third stagger stops tile edges telegraphing lippage across a long floor. Keep joints modest, grout in a beige close to the field tone so the fossil pattern — not the grid — leads the eye, and dry-lay a few rows before fixing to spread fossil density evenly across the area.

Care: Stains, Etches, and the Sealer That Suits Them

Two different things damage limestone, and they have different cures. A stain is absorbed material — oil, rust, organics — and the right poultice or cleaner draws it back out. An etch is chemistry: vinegar, citrus, and acidic tile products dissolve the calcium surface and leave a dull mark no cleaner fixes. So the regimen is simple: a breathable impregnating sealer at installation and on the maker’s exterior schedule to block stains, a pH-neutral stone cleaner and stiff non-wire brush for routine washing, and acids kept off the floor entirely to prevent etching in the first place.
