Start with the duty cycle, not the look
Thickness follows from what walks, rolls or parks on a surface, from what supports it and from how the units are bedded. Get that order right and a terrace behaves for decades. Get it backward and a genuinely beautiful stone fails in a service yard because it was never asked to work there in the first place. On a Jamaican project the duty cycles are usually easy to name in advance: a covered gallery, an open pool surround, a residential driveway, a hotel arrival court and a commercial forecourt with an urban rhythm are five different problems, and pretending they are one problem is how budgets get spent twice. Naming the duty cycle for each area in a single sentence, before anybody opens a sample box, is the cheapest quality control available on a hard landscape package.
Under cover and on foot
Interior floors, covered verandahs and sheltered gallery areas are the lightest duty a stone will ever see. Around 2 cm is the usual convention there, bonded to a sound screed, because there is no vehicle load and nothing on the island introduces frost. The saving is real and it compounds: thinner material means more coverage per pallet, more coverage per container, and a smaller freight share inside the CIF value that Jamaican import charges are computed on. It is one of the few places in a specification where going thinner is a straight gain rather than a gamble. Covered areas are also where the flattest, most controlled substrate usually exists, which is a large part of why the thinner unit behaves so well there.
The exterior standard
Step outside and 3 cm becomes the working default for foot traffic. The extra depth is not decoration. It is tolerance for imperfect bedding, for point loads from furniture and planters, and for the handling that outdoor stone actually receives on a live site.
- Pool decks and surrounds across the north coast resort belt
- Hotel walkways and back-of-house circulation routes
- Private courtyards, terraces and verandah extensions
- Roof terraces where the build-up has been designed around the unit size
- Garden paths that take wheelbarrows as well as guests
Where wheels change everything
Vehicles are where thin stone dies. A driveway, an arrival canopy, a hotel service yard or a Kingston commercial forecourt sees loads no pedestrian surface imagines, and it sees them repeatedly rather than once. Five centimeters and upward is the honest starting point, over a base designed by somebody who has looked at the subgrade. Specifiers weighing thickness choices for Jamaican paving should price the base at the same moment, because the stone is rarely what fails first.
- Residential driveways and turning areas
- Hotel arrival courts and guest drop-off zones
- Service yards taking delivery vans and refuse vehicles
- Commercial forecourts with a genuine urban duty cycle
- Any surface a fire appliance may be required to cross
Format is a load decision too
Thickness and plan size are not independent variables. A large-format unit spans more unsupported area, concentrates stress toward its center and punishes any hollow left in the bed. Smaller units spread movement across more joints and tolerate a base that is merely good rather than perfect.

- Narrow modules suit ramps, edges and awkward level transitions
Bedding is half the specification
Two identical slabs, one on a full bed over a compacted base and one spot-fixed onto an uneven screed, are not the same product in service. Jamaican rainfall sharpens the difference: water that reaches a partially supported unit finds the void, sits in it and eventually lifts the piece.

- Falls have to move water off the terrace, not merely away from the door
- Joint width and jointing material need to suit movement, not just looks
- Edge restraint decides whether a vehicle surface stays where it was laid
None of that is expensive at the time. All of it is painful to retrofit once a terrace is finished, furnished and in use.
Splitting the site by material
Material choice interacts with duty cycle as much as depth does. Dense basalt handles heavy wheeled traffic and disguises tire marking in a way pale stone cannot, which is why it turns up so often on arrival courts and service routes while lighter limestone holds the pool deck and the guest terrace. Projects weighing the two can look at dense basalt paving units alongside limestone and divide the site by duty rather than forcing one material to do every job on the plan.
Specify once, in writing
Write thickness, plan size, finish and quantity into the order against the areas each applies to, and the site stops improvising at the worst possible moment. It is worth remembering what sits under all of this: Jamaica’s quarrying sector, supervised by the Mines and Geology Division under the Mining Act and the Quarries Control Act, works limestone, marble, silica sand, marl and clay, and it supplies the aggregate and base course everything above is bedded on. Imported dimension stone is the calibrated layer laid over that work. Let the traffic decide the thickness and the rest of the specification falls into place.
