Two facts surprise every newcomer to the Virgin Islands in their first hour. The buying advice that follows is blunt: before committing to a steep lot, drive it in a hire car, then ask a builder what a truck does on it. A site that adds fifteen or twenty percent to every material delivery for the life of the project — and to every future renovation, and every repair, forever — is not necessarily a bad buy, but it is a different buy from the one the view suggests. The islands are full of magnificent sites that cost real money to reach; the successful projects are the ones that knew that on the first visit rather than the first invoice.

The route survey comes before the order

On these islands the drawing that matters most is often the road. Traffic runs on the left, the grades are among the steepest in the region, and the last few hundred yards of an approach frequently narrow to something no articulated vehicle will attempt.
