Why Curves Are the Default Here
Straight lines are a luxury on this island. Drives curve because the contour curves, courtyards take their shape from buildings that were there first, and a turning area has to be round because there is nowhere to reverse into. That is why so much Grenadian hardscape ends up radial rather than rectangular, and why the pattern question really comes before the material question. A pattern that fights the shape of the ground will need cutting on every course, and every cut is a weak point, a cost, and one more place for water to sit.
The Fan and the Arc
The fan and the segmental arc solve the same problem in different ways. A fan sets each course as a shallow arc that repeats across the surface, so the pattern absorbs a change of direction without any straight joint running through it. An arc course laid concentrically around a fixed point suits a genuine circle instead.
- A fan suits a wide drive or a terrace that has to bend gently along a contour.
- Concentric arcs suit a turning head, a fountain surround or a court with a tree at the middle.
- Both depend on small units, since a large format simply cannot take a tight radius.
- In each case the joint absorbs the difference between the inside and outside of every arc.
Setting Out a Radius
Radial work is won or lost before any stone is bedded. Setting out is not a formality here; it is the job.
- Fix the center of the arc on the ground with a pin before anything else happens.
- Strike the radius with a tape or a batten rather than trusting an eye line.
- Check the outer arc clears what it has to clear: a gate post, a step, a planted bed.
- Lay a dry course around the full arc first, so joint widths are agreed before bedding is placed.
- Mark the springing points where curved work meets straight work, because that transition is where patterns usually break down.
Courts, Turning Circles and Thresholds
A court is a curve with traffic on it. Turning heads at villas, the space in front of a garage, the drop-off loop at a small hotel: each combines a radius with the scrubbing load a turning vehicle applies. The pattern has to hold together under that. Radial courses are strong in this situation because the joints run across the direction of the turn rather than along it, so the force is resisted by a line of units instead of by one open joint. Keep the units small, keep the joints tight, and give the outer arc a proper restraint. Cuts, Closers and Joint Width
Curved work generates cuts, and cuts are where a good pattern quietly turns into a bad surface. The aim is to design most of them out.
- No cut piece should end up narrower than roughly a third of a full unit.
- Place unavoidable cuts against a restraint or a wall, never in the middle of a trafficked field.
- Let joint width breathe slightly around a curve instead of tapering every single unit.
- Keep the outside joint consistent, because the inside of the arc closes naturally on its own.
- Cut wet where the layout allows, and turn the cut face away from the wearing surface.
Pattern Direction on a Wet Slope
Pattern is not purely a visual decision on this island. Rain arrives hard and often between June and November, and a joint running straight down a slope becomes a channel within a season. Turning the pattern so joints run across the fall, or choosing a fan whose arcs constantly interrupt the downhill line, slows the water and keeps joint filling where it was put. The same choice helps underfoot, because joints set across the direction of travel give more edges to grip. From Drawing to Ground
Most radial failures are not material failures but transfer errors between the drawing and the site.
- Confirm finished levels at every edge before the first course is bedded.
- Set a string line or batten for each arc rather than following the previous course by eye.
- Count units around a trial arc to see whether the radius genuinely suits the format ordered.
- Agree the transition detail between curved and straight areas in advance, on paper.
- Photograph the dry-laid setting out, so the crew can rebuild it if rain stops work overnight.
Ordering So the Pattern Works
Patterns consume stone at a different rate from straight coursing. A fan or a radial court uses more units per square foot than a running course in the same format, because joints open on the outside of every arc and because the perimeter needs cutting. Order accordingly. Tell us the radius, the format you want and the total area, and the crate count can be worked from the pattern rather than from area alone. It is far cheaper to add a crate at the order stage than to chase one across an ocean midway through the job.
