Where Straight Coursing Runs Out
Every hardscape design eventually meets a curve. A driveway sweeping toward a porch, a pool surround following an organic edge, a courtyard wall that was never built square: these are ordinary conditions on Antiguan villa plots, and they are where large-format paving starts to look like a compromise. A big slab can only follow a radius by being cut, and every cut leaves a tapered piece with a weak point and a visible seam. Small units solve the same geometry by rotation. The course turns, the joints open slightly on the outside of the arc, and nothing has to be sacrificed. That is the whole argument for setts on a curved site, and it is why the format outlived every fashion that tried to replace it.
The Arc: One Course at a Time
Curved coursing is the workhorse pattern and the one worth learning first, because almost everything else on a curved site is a variation of it.
- Each course follows the radius, with joints radiating toward the center of the arc
- Joint width opens on the outer edge and closes on the inner edge of every course
- Tighter radii need narrower units so the taper stays within a comfortable range
- Long sweeping curves can often be run with the same unit used on straight sections
- A restrained edge on both sides of the arc keeps the coursing honest over time
Fan and Segmental Layouts
Fan layouts build a surface from repeated segments, each one a small arc that meets its neighbors. The result reads as movement rather than grid, which suits an approach drive or a broad forecourt where a rigid pattern would feel institutional. Where they are used well, the payoff is that the surface absorbs falls and slight irregularities in the boundary without anyone noticing. They are also more demanding to set out than plain coursing, so it is worth knowing what you are asking the mason for.
- Every segment starts from its own marked center, struck before bedding is spread
- Segment spacing has to stay consistent right across the field or the rhythm breaks
- The pattern suits broad forecourts and approach drives better than narrow paths
- Cuts collect at the perimeter, so allow a border course to receive them
Courtyards Want a Center
Enclosed courtyards behave differently from open drives, because the eye takes in the whole surface at once and any drift in the layout is obvious.
- Establish a center point first, whether it is a drain, a tree pit or a feature
- Work outward from that center so cuts land at the perimeter where a border hides them
- Use a border course to absorb the irregularity of walls that were never truly square
- Keep the field pattern quiet if the walls around it are strongly textured
Running Bond, Stack and Herringbone
Straight-line patterns still have a place on curved sites, usually in the panels between the curved elements. Each behaves differently once traffic arrives.
- Running bond stays simple and hides small dimensional variation between units
- Stack bond is crisp but unforgiving, since every joint line must be true
- Herringbone interlocks strongly and is the usual choice under vehicle traffic
- Herringbone laid at forty-five degrees to the direction of travel resists creep well
- Mixing patterns works if each one occupies a clearly defined panel with a border

Setting Out on Site
Patterns fail during setting out, not during laying. Mark the centers, strike the arcs with a string and a pin, and chalk the first three courses of every curved element before anyone spreads bedding. Check the layout against the actual boundary rather than the drawing, because on an island where many walls predate the survey, the drawing is optimistic. Once the first courses are down and checked, the rest of the field follows quickly, and a good mason will hold the line for the whole area without further marking. Cutting, Waste and Order Quantity
Curved work generates more waste than rectangular work, and offcuts from a radius rarely find a second home. That has a direct effect on how much stone you order and therefore on freight and duty. Ask the installer for a cutting allowance in writing once the setting-out is agreed, and add it to the order before shipping rather than after. A second small shipment into St John’s carries its own freight, its own clearance and its own broker involvement, because Customs requires a broker once a consignment passes six lines or EC$5,000.
Try the Pattern Before You Commit
Patterns look different on the ground from how they look on paper, and the difference is usually scale. Order small samples, lay a trial panel of the actual pattern at the actual size, and walk across it before signing anything off. Look at it in glare and after rain, since a texture that reads beautifully at midday can vanish completely in the afternoon. A panel of a dozen units answers more questions in ten minutes than a week of drawings. Set the pattern out properly on the first morning and the whole surface stays true for the life of the paving.
