Curves are not a luxury detail in Jamaica
Look at how Jamaican properties are actually laid out. Gates open onto sloping approach roads, so drives arrive in an arc rather than a straight run. Apartment blocks in Kingston are built around a central court, because that is where cars turn and residents cross. Hotels on the north coast use crescents, circles and planted islands at their entrances, and the drop-off has to work for a coach as well as a car. Even a small townhouse yard usually arrives at a curve somewhere, because the gate, the parking space and the front step are rarely in a straight line. Straight-line paving is the exception here, not the rule, and the pattern you choose has to bend without collapsing into a field of triangular offcuts.
Patterns that turn, and patterns that fight back
Some layouts absorb a radius gracefully. Others resist it and charge you for the privilege.
- Fan and arc coursing follow a curve naturally, having been designed for exactly this
- Random coursed setts in mixed lengths bend easily and hide closures well
- Running bond turns only if you accept regular tapered cuts along one side
- Herringbone is superb under load in a straight field but expensive to close on a curve
- Stack bond is the least forgiving layout on anything other than a rectangle
Fan coursing, circles and turning heads
Fan work is the classic answer for a courtyard or a turning head. Repeating arcs let the coursing rotate around a set of centers, so joint lines stay even as the field curves and the eye reads the result as deliberate rather than adjusted. It is slower to lay and demands disciplined setting out, but on a circular court it removes almost every awkward closure that a rectangular pattern would generate. Set the centers on the ground and check them twice, because a fan laid from an approximate center loses its symmetry by the third course and never recovers it. Kingston courts and commercial forecourts
Urban Jamaica gives sett paving a hard duty cycle. Apartment courts absorb resident parking, visitor turning and service access on one surface. Commercial forecourts in the capital take delivery vans while pedestrians cross in every direction, and neither group waits for the other.
- Spread the joint lines rather than aligning them with the wheel path
- Keep the radius generous enough for the largest vehicle that genuinely visits
- Change pattern, not level, where a parking bay meets a walking route
- Assume a service trench will cross the court at some point in its life

Setting out a curve on site
Most curve failures are setting-out failures rather than laying failures.
- Mark centers and radii physically before a single unit is placed
- Lay a dry run of the first three courses and inspect it from a distance
- Keep joint width constant and let the arc absorb the change, never the joints
- Work outward from the tightest radius, where errors compound fastest
- Check the level string across the arc as often as you check it along the arc
Cuts, closures and how much to order
Curved work uses more stone than the drawing implies. Every closure at a boundary is a cut, every cut leaves an offcut, and offcuts on a curve are rarely reusable because the angles never repeat. On an island where a top-up shipment means another clearance cycle, spare stone is cheap insurance.
- Allow more waste on radial patterns than on straight coursing
- Order a range of lengths so closures can be made by selection rather than by saw
- Keep offcuts for edge courses and planting-bed borders
- Hold spare units from the same shipment for future repairs
Ordering the right mix of sizes
A curve is far easier to lay when the pallet gives the crew choices. Small squares turn tight radii, short rectangles course around gentler arcs, and a few larger units settle the straight runs between them. Ask for that size mix at quotation stage rather than after the container has been packed, because improvising a mix on site means cutting stone you already paid to ship. Joints, rain and the long view
Whatever the pattern, the joint fails first in Jamaican rain. Heavy runoff strips loose fill from a radial layout faster than from a straight one, because water follows the arcs and gathers speed along them. Bind the joints where falls are steep, keep the outlets generous, and inspect them after the first serious storm of the season instead of at the end of it.
