Curves are the default, not the exception
Look at almost any urbanizacion plan on this island and you find radii everywhere: cul-de-sac heads, sweeping entrance drives, rounded forecourts at gated communities, circular turning areas at resort entrances, and terrazas that curve because the lot did. Add the coastal sites at Rincon and the east coast where paving follows a shoreline, and straight-line paving starts to look like the special case. That changes the pattern conversation entirely. A layout chosen for a rectangular yard will fight a curve for as long as it exists, and the fight is permanent because paving is not something anyone rearranges later. The pattern decision therefore belongs at the start of the design, alongside levels and drainage, rather than at the end alongside plant selection.
Why small units turn and large ones cannot
Geometry decides this, not taste. A curve requires each course to be slightly shorter on the inside than the outside, and small units absorb that difference across many joints instead of forcing it into a few. That is why setts have been the traditional answer to curved paving for centuries in every stone-building culture. A large-format losa has to be cut into a wedge, and every wedge is a visible decision. A sett simply rotates a fraction and carries on. The smaller the unit, the tighter the radius it will follow cleanly, which is why the tightest arc on your drawing, not the largest open area, should drive the format choice for the whole scheme.
Setting out a true radius
A curve that is not truly set out will look wrong even when every unit is laid perfectly. The setting-out stage is worth more time than most crews give it.
- Establish the true center of every arc and mark it physically, not by eye from the plan.
- Sweep the radius with a string or trammel and check it at several points around the arc.
- Lay a dry trial course along the tightest part of the curve before bedding anything.
- Decide up front where two arcs meet and how that junction will be closed.
- Set the perimeter restraint to the true curve first, then work the field into it.
Fan and radial coursing
Fan and segmental arc patterns exist precisely because curved ground demanded them. Each fan absorbs geometry within its own segment, so a long sweeping drive can change direction without the pattern ever announcing the change. Radial coursing around a center point suits circular turning areas and forecourts, where every course naturally follows the shape. Both read as intentional craft rather than as a compromise, and both are far more forgiving of a site that is not perfectly true than a grid ever is. Courtyards, patios and the enclosed terraza
The interior court is a genuine architectural tradition here, and it asks different questions of a pattern than an open driveway does.
- Enclosed courts are read from above and from windows, so the pattern is seen whole rather than in passing.
- Center the layout on the thing the court is actually about: a fountain, a tree, a doorway.
- Keep cut units away from the middle of the field and push them to the perimeter where planting can soften them.
- Remember that a court traps heat and light, so surface texture matters more than in an open yard.
Cuts, closures and honest tolerance
Curved work generates cuts. Pretending otherwise leads to short orders and mismatched top-ups, so plan for it. Formats suited to tight radii are worth checking against your drawing, and the small-format setts for curves are usually where a curved scheme should start.
- Allow additional material for curved fields over and above a straight-run allowance.
- Cut on site rather than ordering pre-cut wedges, since real curves rarely match drawn ones exactly.
- Keep cut faces consistent in direction so the eye reads a rhythm rather than an accident.
- Reserve spare units from the same batch for repairs, because a later batch will not blend perfectly.
Glare and how a pattern reads in island sun
Strong overhead sun flattens everything at midday and then rakes across the surface in late afternoon, picking out every joint line and every ripple in the field.
- Textured faces scatter light and cut the glare that a polished surface throws back.
- Radial patterns catch low sun differently along each course, which adds depth rather than noise.
- Check a trial panel in the afternoon, when defects in level are most visible.
- Consider how pool reflection or a white wall will bounce additional light onto the paving.
Ordering the right quantities for a curved field
Curved layouts consume material unevenly, and a fan pattern that runs beautifully in the middle of a drive still needs closure units at every edge. Take quantities from the actual setting-out drawing rather than from a simple area calculation, add a working allowance for cuts, and then add a small reserve to be stored dry on site. Ordering once is always cheaper than ordering twice, especially where deliveries follow a shipping schedule rather than a same-week collection from a local yard. A second batch also carries a second risk, because stone drawn later can sit a shade apart from the first, and on a curved field that difference lands exactly where the eye is already traveling.
