The Two Storms That Set the Design Case

Edge Restraint and Scour

A free edge is the weak point in any paved surface, and heavy run-off finds it first. Once water gets under that edge and starts moving bedding material, the units either drop or spread, and the repair is far larger than the original detail would have cost. Restrain every free edge, upstand the restraint properly against the bedding layer, and treat the downhill edge of a sloping terrace as a structural element rather than a trim. The edges worth checking twice are predictable.

  • The downhill edge of any terrace built on a fall.
