A wet room is a drainage detail first
Everything visible in a wet room depends on decisions that are buried before the stone arrives. Where the drain sits, how the floor falls toward it, how the waterproof layer is formed and lapped, and how the whole assembly moves between a hot afternoon and a cool night. Get those right and almost any sensible stone will perform. Get them wrong and no finish, sealer or grout will rescue the room. So resolve the wet room on the section drawing before choosing a tile, and treat the tile choice as the last decision rather than the first one. That order can feel backward when a client arrives with a picture of a floor and no idea where the drain is going, but it is the order that produces a bathroom nobody has to open up again.
What goes under the tile
The layers beneath a stone wet room floor each have a job, and skipping one shifts the load onto another that was never designed for it:
- A structurally sound, stable base that will not deflect under load
- A screed forming the falls, laid to the drain rather than corrected later with adhesive
- A continuous waterproof layer, carried up the walls and lapped correctly at the drain
- An adhesive suited to natural stone and to the substrate it is bonding to
- Movement provision at the perimeter and at any change of substrate
None of this is exotic; it is simply the sequence that has to be followed in order, and the one most often compressed when a schedule slips.
Falls, drains and the shower floor
A shower floor has to move water to the drain without ponding and without feeling like a slope underfoot. That balance is easier with smaller units, which follow a fall in short steps rather than bridging it. Points to settle on the drawing:
- Whether the drain is central, linear along a wall, or set at the entry side
- How many directions the floor must fall in to reach it
- Where the joint lines land relative to the drain body
- How the fall meets the threshold without water escaping the zone
Formats for a shower floor
Small formats and mosaic-scale units suit shower floors because more joints mean more grip and easier conformity to the fall. Larger tiles can work in a wet room outside the shower zone, where the fall is gentler, and running the same stone at two scales keeps the room visually calm while the performance changes where it needs to. The wall can take a larger module than the floor without any conflict. Specify limestone units cut for shower floors with the fall already known, so thickness, size and joint width are decided together rather than in sequence.
The threshold is where projects fail
The junction at the door does more work than any other part of the room. It has to contain water, handle a change of finish, take the most concentrated foot traffic in the house, and often manage a level change too. Details worth insisting on:
- Cut the threshold from the same stone so tone and finish stay continuous
- Form the upstand or slope in the substrate, not in the adhesive bed
- Land the joint where the door closes so the change is not seen from outside
- Set a textured face on the wet side and a smoother one beyond it
- Seal around the frame properly, since fixings puncture the waterproof layer
Water is not casual on this island
Curacao is a dry place, with published rainfall records ranging from roughly 450 to 650 mm a year depending on the source. That has shaped the buildings: the traditional high gabled roofs with red tiles collected rainwater and channeled it into stone reservoirs, which is a useful precedent for any detail that has to move water deliberately. A wet room that only cleans properly under a running hose is a poor fit. Detail it so that a bucket, a soft brush and a squeegee do the job, with falls that clear the floor quickly and joints that do not hold standing water anywhere.
Air movement in a salt-air house
Ventilation finishes what drainage starts. A bathroom that clears its moisture quickly stays cleaner, keeps its joints in better condition and needs less intervention. On sea-facing rooms the incoming air also carries salt, so the fittings around the stone matter: fixings, frames and trims near the coast face a harder life than the stone does. Choose them for the exposure, keep the room able to dry itself between uses, and the floor will look after itself for a long time with only routine attention. A window that opens, a working extract fan, and a shower screen that does not trap water against a wall will each do more for the stone than any product applied to it.
Order the extra pieces at the same time
Wet rooms need more than field tiles, and specials ordered later rarely match a lot cut months earlier. Put the whole schedule together in one go:
- Field tiles for the floor, plus smaller units for the shower zone
- The threshold piece, cut to the opening rather than adapted on site
- Any step, bench or niche shelf in the same stone
- Spares stored flat and dry for future repairs
Before the schedule is fixed, try a sample in your own water and see how the face behaves wet. The threshold detail decides whether a wet room stays a wet room.
