Where the Curves Actually Are
Curves on these islands are less a design flourish than a consequence of the ground. Hillside roads on St. Thomas and St. John switch back rather than climb straight, so the drives leaving them arrive on an arc. Villa turning circles are curved because the alternative is a three-point turn on a slope. Courtyards in the older parts of town are shaped by the buildings around them, and those buildings are rarely square to one another. Any of those conditions punishes a paving layout drawn as a rectangle and then forced to fit.
Why Small Units Turn and Large Ones Do Not
Geometry does most of the arguing here, and it argues for the small unit.
- A curve is followed by tapering the joints, and a small unit needs a smaller taper to do it.
- Cut pieces at a radius read as part of the field when the whole field is made of small pieces.
- A tight arc can often be built from full units alone if the unit is small enough.
- Waste falls sharply, because a large slab cut to a curve loses most of its area.
- A curved edge can be adjusted on site without reordering, which a slab layout cannot absorb.
Radial Fans and How They Are Set Out
A fan layout sets courses on arcs struck from repeating centers, so the pattern turns with the ground instead of being cut to fit it. It suits wide approaches and turning areas, and it absorbs the small dimensional variation that comes with any hand-worked unit. It also asks more of the setter, because the centers must be marked, the arcs struck accurately, and the first courses laid slowly. Everything after them inherits their accuracy. Layouts built from small setts laid on true arcs depend on the setting-out being right on the first day.
- Mark the arc centers on the base and keep them marked until the field closes.
- Strike the first courses from a string or trammel rather than by eye.
- Check the joint taper every few courses and correct it gradually, never all at once.
- Keep one sorted size range within a fan so the taper stays consistent across it.
Concentric Arcs for Courtyards
A courtyard reads differently from a driveway. Concentric rings around a center point give an enclosed space a focus and let the paving absorb walls that are not parallel, which is common in the older towns. The ring nearest the middle takes the most cutting, so it is often set as a small feature circle with the rings widening outward from it. Where a courtyard has a drain or a tree pit, that point usually wants to be the center of the geometry rather than an obstacle dropped into the middle of a grid.
Where a Curve Meets a Straight Run
The junction is the detail that gets skipped and then gets noticed. A fan meeting a straight path, or an arc meeting a wall line, needs a deliberate transition, usually a soldier course, a border, or a change of unit that gives the eye a line to read. - Use a border course to close a fan against a straight edge or a curb line.
- Keep the border unit at the same depth as the field so the surface stays flush.
- Draw the junction rather than leaving it to site, since it is where two setters’ work meets.
- Restrain the outer edge of any curve properly, because a curved edge spreads faster than a straight one.
Cutting, Waste and the Sample Panel
Curved work needs a larger allowance than straight work, and that allowance should be agreed before the order is placed rather than discovered halfway through the job. A sample panel laid on site is the cheapest insurance available, settling the pattern, the joint width, the taper and the client’s expectations in a couple of square feet. On an island where a shortfall means waiting for the next sailing, an accurate allowance is worth considerably more than it is on the mainland.
Texture, Glare and Bare Feet
Surface treatment matters more on a curve than people expect, because a radial pattern makes any inconsistency legible.
- A worked face scatters light, which matters where sun sits on an open court for most of the day.
- Texture gives grip when rain arrives in bursts between May and October.
- Darker units run warmer underfoot, while paler units stay easier on bare feet.
- Keep the finish consistent across a curve, since a change of texture reads as a mistake in a radial field.
Setting Out on Site
Radial work is won or lost in the first hour. Mark the centers, check them against the drawing, and lay a short trial run before committing the crew to the full field. Agree who is responsible for holding the geometry if more than one setter is working, and keep a sorted size range on hand so the taper never has to be forced. None of this is expensive at the start, and all of it is expensive to correct later.
