The wet room is a drainage problem
Nothing in a wet room forgives a poor fall. Water that cannot reach a drain will find a joint, sit under a threshold or track out into the hallway, and no stone specification rescues that. The sequence matters: waterproofing, falls, drain position, then bedding, then tile. Falls, drains and the module
The drain type dictates how the tile has to behave, so pick it early rather than late. A module chosen before the drain is settled has to be made to fit afterward, and that is where lipped edges and awkward slivers come from.
- A center point drain needs falls from four directions, which suits smaller modules.
- A linear drain at one end lets a floor fall in a single plane, which suits larger formats.
- Any large tile forced into a two-way fall will lift at a corner or crack a joint.
- Set the drain where the flow actually goes, not where it is tidiest on the drawing.
- Keep the joint layout square to the drain so cuts around it read as intentional.
Choosing the stone for constant water
A shower floor is the hardest position in the house for any natural material, because it is wet, soapy and warm in rotation, and in a humid climate it may never fully dry between one use and the next. Ask for the numbers rather than the adjectives, and ask for them before a color is agreed with the client.
- Absorption figures in writing, so you know what the stone will take up.
- Density, which governs how the surface handles daily wear and cleaning.
- A face with real texture inside the shower, and a calmer one outside it.
- Consistent depth across the batch, because a shower base has no room for packing.
Thresholds, the joint that fails first
The threshold is where two build-ups, two falls and often two trades meet. It is also the line that leaks. A stone threshold should be a single piece rather than a joint, it should be bedded solid with no voids underneath, and it should be set so that water is pushed back toward the drain rather than led out into the room. Cut it from the same lot as the floor so the tone matches, and have it made to the opening rather than trimmed on site from a spare tile. Formats that suit small wet rooms
Small rooms punish the wrong module quickly, because every cut is on show and every joint is underfoot.
- Smaller modules give more joints, and joints are where grip lives underfoot.
- A wall format that lines through with the floor makes a small room look resolved.
- Niches and benches should be cut from the same lot, not from a later order.
- Keep large formats for the dry zone and change module at the shower entry.
Hotel refits and rooms out of service
Resort and timeshare refurbishment is a real part of what gets built here, and a bathroom refit in that setting is measured in rooms out of service rather than in square feet. That changes the specification in two ways. Lots have to match across phases, so a room finished this season sits beside one finished next season without an obvious break in tone. And spares have to exist on the island, because a single cracked tile cannot be allowed to hold a room closed while a container is arranged. Both points are cheaper to solve at the ordering stage than at the handover meeting, and neither depends on how large the program is. It is worth writing the lot reference into the room schedule itself, so the information survives a change of contractor or a gap of a season between phases.
White limestone rooms
Where the brief calls for a pale bathroom, light is usually as much of the reason as looks are. A pale floor shows soap film sooner than a mid-toned one, which is an argument for a slightly textured face and a realistic cleaning routine rather than an argument against the color. Ventilation helps more than most people expect, since a room that dries between uses stays clean with far less effort, and an extract fan that actually runs long enough is worth more than any product on a shelf. Before the tiler starts
- Confirm the waterproofing system and who is responsible for signing it off.

- Put the spare allowance in the original order, stored flat and dry on site.
