Two Coasts, Two Specifications
Grenada is small enough to drive across in a morning and varied enough that one paving specification will not serve the whole island. The exposed Atlantic side, taking in Grenville, La Sagesse, Bathway and Levera, meets weather and salt-laden air head on. The sheltered Caribbean west, from the Carenage through Grand Anse and Morne Rouge, sits in the lee and behaves quite differently. Writing one detail for both coasts is an easily avoided error on an island job.
Reading the Rainfall Map
Rainfall is the defining variable, and it changes dramatically over a very short distance. The northern and southern coastal belts receive roughly 1,500 mm, about 60 inches, a year. The central highlands take around 3,800 mm, near 150 inches. The dry season runs roughly January to May and the wet season June to December, with the heaviest monthly totals falling between June and November.

- The wettest months are also the storm months, so drainage is tested at the worst moment.
- Falls, outfalls and jointing should be sized against the site’s own rainfall, not an island average.

Wet Slip Resistance Comes First
On a steep, high-rainfall island, wet slip resistance is a first-order requirement rather than a refinement bolted on at the end. Steps down to a pool, a sloping path between terraces and a driveway apron all spend part of the year genuinely wet. The trade is straightforward, and it is far cheaper to make now than to retrofit later.
- Texture anything that falls, anything bare feet use and anything a vehicle crosses.
- Keep smoother surfaces for level, sheltered floors where they can be enjoyed safely.
- Wet a sample on the actual slope before you sign off a finish for the whole area.
- Match step nosings to the tread so a change of level reads clearly in poor light.
Living With a Seven-Month Wet Season
Algae, moss and general biological staining are the honest maintenance story in the tropics, and no natural stone is immune. What varies is how quickly a surface recovers and how visible the growth is while it lasts. Shade, retained moisture and organic debris drive it far more than material choice does.
- Keep planting back from paved edges so leaf litter does not sit and feed growth.
- Fall water away from walls rather than letting it track along a shaded junction.
- Expect a wash-down at the end of the wet season and plan access for it.
- Avoid trapping water in low joints, which is where staining always begins.
- Sample a finish outdoors for a few weeks before committing a whole terrace to it.
Falls, Joints and Drainage That Match the Runoff
Highland rainfall arrives fast and leaves fast, and that is what sizes the drainage. Generous falls, deep and well-filled joints, and outfalls large enough for a heavy hour are worth more than any product decision on the page.
- Size outfalls for a heavy hour rather than for an average month.
- Fill joints properly the first time, because a hollow joint is where failure starts.
- Detail the perimeter as carefully as the field, since runoff concentrates where paving stops.
- Keep water out of the bedding, because water in the bedding takes the level with it.
Detailing Before the Wet Season
Grenada sits at the southern end of the hurricane belt, and September 2004 is the date against which the island measures things. That is design context and nothing more. Paving does not protect a building and should never be sold as though it might. What good detail can do is stay in place and keep water moving while everything around it is under pressure. Restrained edges, compacted bases and joints that were filled properly the first time are unglamorous work that pays for itself quietly. Seismic and Planning Context
The seismic research unit at the University of the West Indies monitors Kick ’em Jenny, an active submarine volcano about 8 km north of Grenada, from four working stations in the north of the island, and maintains a 1.5 km exclusion zone around the summit with the Government of Grenada. For a paving contractor this is background rather than headline, but it is one more reason movement joints, compaction and edge restraint are treated as structural items here. Carriacou and Petite Martinique Read Differently
The sister isles are not a smaller version of the mainland. They receive far less rain and can face severe drought through the dry season, which flips several assumptions at once: less runoff to manage, more dust, more thermal stress and a longer wait between natural wash-downs. Materials and access both need thinking through separately, and so does the freight.
