One Ring Changes the Ground

That power is why the circle has survived every fashion cycle in hardscaping – and why it demands restraint. A circle organizes everything around itself, which means it must be placed like a fountain, not scattered like gravel: deliberately, once, where the garden actually wants its heart.
The Circular Family
Round work comes in several distinct trades:
- The full feature circle – a paved room in rings, from six feet across to grand
- The sett rosette – a small decorative burst set into a plainer field
- Functional surrounds – fire pits, trees, fountains, each ringed to its duty
- Aprons and arrival circles, where drives open into a turning ground
They share geometry but not scale, and the ordering conversation differs for each – a rosette is an accent purchase, a feature circle is furniture-grade planning.
Three Routes to a Round
Every circle on the ground got there one of three ways. Pre-cut kits assemble standard diameters from wedge-shaped pieces that close each ring without site cutting – the fast, certain route. Radius fabrication cuts your chosen stone to the true curve, any diameter, at saw-time cost – the custom route. Laying Rings That Stay Round
A circle begins as a single nail driven where its center will live. Grand radii tolerate larger pieces, radius-cut so edges follow the curve truly. Whatever the material, one thickness across feature and field keeps the meeting flush – a circle that stands proud of its surround reads as a repair, not a jewel. Ordering a Circle
Bring the diameter, the duty and the field it sits in; the quote returns as rings – piece counts per course for kits and setts, fabrication lines for radius cuts, and the transition margin for the surrounding zone stated plainly. The Most Expensive Cuts in Paving
A circle generates the highest waste of any layout, and the reason is simple: almost every cut is radial, tapered, and leaves an offcut that fits nowhere else. A kit avoids this entirely by supplying pre-tapered units; cutting a circle from rectangular stock does not.

Kit, Setts or Cut Stone
There are three honest ways to build a circle and they have very different costs, both in material and in labor. Choosing between them before the design is fixed saves an expensive conversation later.
- A manufactured kit: lowest waste, fastest to lay, fixed diameters only
- Small setts laid in concentric rings: flexible on diameter, slow, forgiving on tolerance
- Cut stone with radial joints: the sharpest result, the highest waste, the most saw time
- A hybrid, with a sett rosette at the center and cut stone at the rim
- A square field with an inscribed circle, which moves every awkward cut to the corners
- Whichever route, set the center point permanently before any bedding goes down

- Allow the higher waste band rather than the average one
- Design the transition into the surrounding field deliberately
