Every laying pattern taxes an order differently: a straight bond trims only its borders, a diagonal herringbone cuts every edge course, and the French module wants whole sets rather than loose pieces. This calculator turns a measured area into an order quantity using the same waste factors published in the paver laying patterns guide – midpoints of honest ranges, not promises to the decimal. Treat the result as the planning number to sanity-check a quote against, and let the final cutting list be confirmed against your actual drawing, where border lengths and obstacles set the real margin.

How the margins are set

Each factor is the midpoint of the range that pattern genuinely consumes on real jobs. Straight-lay layouts sit at five percent, since only their perimeters ever meet a saw. Herringbone splits by angle: the square set stays modest, while the diagonal set pays for its stronger interlock at the edges of the field. Fan work spends its allowance where arcs close and neighbors meet, and irregular flagstone spends its margin at the sorting bench more than the saw. The French module is the different animal: cutting stays minimal, but purchasing happens in whole groups of the four sizes – so the calculator counts groups for you and adds a small edge allowance. Small areas round up harder than large ones, simply because a whole group is the minimum purchase.

From number to order

The number this tool produces is area. The quote that follows adds what a calculator cannot know: thickness for the duty, format for the pattern, and the border courses that frame the field. What the Margin Is Actually Covering

A waste margin is not a contingency for mistakes. It is the arithmetic of cutting: every unit that meets a boundary produces an offcut, and whether that offcut is reusable depends entirely on the pattern. A half-unit closer from a running bond field goes straight back in at the opposite edge. A tapered radial cut from a circle goes in the skip.

These are planning allowances rather than guarantees. Site shape moves the real figure more than the pattern does, and three conditions push any job toward the top of its band.

  • Curved, angled or stepped boundaries, which multiply cut units
  • Small areas, where the perimeter is a large share of the whole
  • Any pattern laid diagonally to the dominant edge
  • Natural stone with a wide thickness or shade range, where selection loss is real

From the Number to a Real Order

The figure the calculator returns is a starting point for a conversation, not a purchase order. Two adjustments turn it into something a supplier can quote against.

  • Separate the field from the border, because the field is bought by area and the border by the running foot
  • Confirm the coverage per crate or per set, which varies by format and by thickness
  • Add attic stock on top of the waste margin, since a later batch will not match
  • Fix the joint width before the coverage math, because it changes the unit count

Pattern choice also has to survive the traffic on the finished surface: herringbone at 45 or 90 degrees is what the application guide for interlocking concrete pavements recommends wherever vehicles run continually, and continuous-joint patterns are more susceptible to creep under horizontal loading according to the Brick Industry Association guidance on paver bond selection.
