Crushed basalt aggregate is excluded from the per-square-foot index because it is sold per ton ($20/ton list at time of publication).
Methodology
This index aggregates the live, published wholesale list prices of every product in the Citadel Stone catalog — 85 SKUs across limestone, basalt and shellstone pavers, tiles, cobblestones, curbstones, pool coping and steps. Prices are quarry-direct wholesale, quoted per square foot, and exclude freight, which is quoted per order. Low, median and high are computed within each material and product-type group. The index is refreshed quarterly from the same catalog; changes are recorded in the change log below.
What moves stone prices
Within a material, four factors move the per-square-foot price more than the stone species itself: thickness (structural paving costs more than cladding gauges), finish (brushed, sawn, honed, tumbled, split-face and bush-hammered each carry different processing time), format (large-format and cut-to-size run above standard modular sizes), and order volume (pallet versus container). That is why basalt and limestone overlap so heavily in the table above — at wholesale, processing drives cost as much as geology. To turn these rates into a project budget, use our project cost estimator and coverage calculator.
Wholesale vs. retail
The figures above are wholesale, quarry-direct rates. The same stone typically reaches homeowners at a meaningful multiple of these numbers after import, distribution and retail margins are added along the way. That gap — not the stone itself — is usually the biggest line in a hardscaping quote, which is why contractors and volume buyers purchase at wholesale. Our full range is browsable from the natural stone pavers collection.

Frequently asked questions
What does natural stone paving cost per square foot at wholesale?
Across the 84 per-square-foot products in this index (Q3 2026), wholesale prices run from $1.96 to $3.20 per square foot, with a median of $2.50. Pavers and tiles sit at the lower end; cobblestones, pool coping and steps carry more fabrication and sit higher.
Why is basalt priced so close to limestone?
At wholesale, price is driven mainly by thickness, finish and fabrication time rather than stone species. A brushed basalt paver and a brushed limestone paver of the same gauge take similar effort to produce, so their prices overlap almost completely.
Do these prices include delivery?
No. All figures are quarry-direct wholesale rates excluding freight. Delivery is quoted per order — from single pallets to full containers — to all 50 states.
How often is the index updated?
Quarterly. Each edition is recomputed from the live catalog and dated, and every revision is recorded in the change log so historical figures remain traceable.
