Polished basalt tiles on a sleek floor
These polished basalt tiles create a glossy, modern floor that’s both stunning and low-maintenance for any home.

Introduction to Basalt Tiles

Basalt is an igneous rock formed from cooled lava, rich in minerals like plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine. Its dense composition and dark, uniform tones—typically ranging from deep gray to charcoal—make it a standout choice for tiles. At Citadel Stone, we source premium basalt from volcanic regions, crafting it into tiles that blend strength with sophistication.

Why Choose Basalt Tiles?

    • Durability: Resistant to scratches, wear, and weathering, basalt withstands the test of time.

    • Timeless Beauty: Its natural hues and subtle patterns suit a variety of design styles.

    • Eco-Friendly: As a natural stone, basalt is sustainable and abundant.

    • Versatility: Ideal for flooring, walls, countertops, and outdoor applications.

The finish you choose—polished, honed, or flamed—dramatically affects both the look and performance of your basalt tiles. Let’s dive into each option to help you decide which is best for your space.

Polished Basalt Tiles

Reliable polished basalt tiles for exterior projects exude elegance with their glossy, reflective surface. This finish amplifies the stone’s natural colors and patterns, creating a luxurious, light-filled ambiance.

How It’s Achieved

The polishing process involves grinding the basalt slab with progressively finer abrasive pads, often diamond-tipped, until it achieves a mirror-like sheen. This meticulous technique seals the stone’s pores, enhancing its stain resistance and smoothness.

Pros of Polished Basalt Tiles

    • Stunning Aesthetic: The high gloss highlights basalt’s depth, making it a focal point in any room.

    • Easy to Clean: Spills wipe away effortlessly from the smooth surface.

    • Stain-Resistant: Closed pores reduce the risk of staining from liquids like wine or oil.

Cons of Polished Basalt Tiles

    • Slippery When Wet: The glossy finish lacks traction, posing a hazard in wet areas.

    • Visible Scratches: While durable, scratches and scuffs show more prominently on the reflective surface.

    • Maintenance Needs: Periodic re-polishing may be required to preserve the shine.

Best Uses

Polished basalt shines in spaces where beauty trumps heavy use:

    • Kitchen countertops and backsplashes

    • Bathroom vanities

    • Accent walls

    • Low-traffic indoor flooring

Care Tips for Polished Basalt

    • Use a soft cloth and mild detergent for cleaning to avoid scratches.

    • Place coasters under acidic beverages to prevent etching.

    • Re-polish every few years to maintain the glossy finish.

Honed basalt tiles line this shower, offering a matte finish that’s slip-resistant and perfect for wet spaces.

Honed Basalt Tiles

Stylish basalt tiles honed finish for high-traffic areas offer a matte, understated elegance that’s both modern and practical. This finish provides a smooth, non-reflective surface that’s less showy than polished but equally sophisticated.

How It’s Achieved

Honing involves grinding the basalt with coarse abrasives to create a flat, even surface, stopping before the stone becomes glossy. The result is a satin-like finish that emphasizes texture over shine.

Pros of Honed Basalt Tiles

    • Improved Traction: The matte surface is less slippery, ideal for wet or high-traffic areas.

    • Conceals Wear: Scratches and scuffs blend into the non-reflective finish.

    • Contemporary Appeal: Perfect for minimalist, industrial, or modern designs.

Cons of Honed Basalt Tiles

    • Porosity: Without polishing, the stone is more prone to staining.

    • Sealing Required: Regular sealing is necessary to protect against spills.

    • Cleaning Challenges: Dirt can cling to the matte surface, requiring more effort to clean.

Best Uses

Honed basalt excels in functional, stylish spaces:

    • Bathroom and kitchen floors

    • Hallways and entryways

    • Commercial interiors

    • Wet areas like showers

Care Tips for Honed Basalt

    • Apply a high-quality sealer upon installation and re-seal annually.

    • Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner to preserve the sealant.

    • Avoid abrasive scrubbers that could damage the finish.

Flamed Basalt Tiles

Flamed basalt tiles bring a rugged, natural charm with their textured, uneven surface. This finish celebrates the stone’s raw beauty, making each tile unique.

How It’s Achieved

The flaming process uses a high-temperature torch to heat the basalt slab, causing the surface to burst and flake. After flaming, the tile is cooled with water, locking in a coarse, slip-resistant texture.

Pros of Flamed Basalt Tiles

    • Superior Slip Resistance: The rough surface provides excellent grip, perfect for wet or outdoor areas.

    • Hides Imperfections: Scratches and wear blend into the textured finish.

    • Rustic Character: Adds a distinctive, organic feel to any space.

Cons of Flamed Basalt Tiles

    • Cleaning Difficulty: Dirt and debris can get trapped in the texture.

    • Limited Design Fit: The rustic look may clash with sleek, modern aesthetics.

    • Comfort Concerns: The rough surface can feel harsh under bare feet indoors.

Best Uses

Flamed basalt thrives in rugged, high-use environments:

    • Outdoor patios and walkways

    • Pool surrounds

    • Garden paths

    • Rustic interiors

Care Tips for Flamed Basalt

    • Brush away dirt with a stiff broom or use a pressure washer for outdoor tiles.

    • Apply a penetrating sealer to guard against stains.

    • Avoid harsh chemicals that could erode the texture.

You are a good businessman and I believe a good person. I admire your honesty, this is why I call you a good businessman.
Gemma CPrivate Project
Undoubtedly the price was the reason that we chose Citadel stone, in addition to the fact that you offer a white limestone that is hard to source. Your products are very good value for money by comparison with other companies. You have helped at every stage of the process and have been quick and reliable in your responses. It was a big risk for us to pay everything up front including shipping and not know the quality. You did make me feel that I could trust you and your company however and we are very happy with the tiles. They appear to have been finished to a very high quality of smoothness and I can't wait to see them once they have been laid. We need to see now how easy they are to fit and maintain, yet you also sealed them before shipment so we think that they will be very durable. Our building project has been delayed for a few months now so it may be sometime before we see them laid, but I promise that I will send photos as soon as we have them down. Thank you so much Kareem and your team, you have done a great job. I am hoping that we can pay for, and receive our second shipment in the not too far future, so that we can finish everything off. Wishing you well. Gemma

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question is not listed, please email us at [email protected]

What is the difference between polished, honed, and flamed finishes for basalt tiles?

Polished finishes provide a shiny, reflective surface that enhances the natural color of basalt, offering a luxurious look. Honed finishes feature a satin sheen with less gloss, resulting in a soft, matte appearance that is smooth to the touch. Flamed finishes are achieved by subjecting the tile to intense heat, which causes the surface to be rough and textured, ideal for outdoor or high-traffic areas.

Polished basalt tiles are renowned for their elegant appearance and ability to reflect light, making spaces feel more open. They are also easier to clean and maintain due to their smooth surface, and they can enhance the look of both modern and traditional interiors. However, they may be slippery when wet, so careful placement is advised.

Yes, honed basalt tiles are suitable for outdoor use, thanks to their non-slip surface that offers good traction, even when damp. They provide a sophisticated look while being resistant to scratching and staining, making them an excellent choice for patios, walkways, and pool areas.

Flamed basalt tiles require minimal maintenance due to their rugged surface, which effectively masks dirt and wear. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with mild soap and water are typically sufficient. Their textured finish also makes them ideal for slippery areas, reducing the need for extensive upkeep compared to polished finishes.

Flamed basalt tiles are generally the best choice for high-traffic areas because of their slip resistance and ability to hide scratches and dirt. Honed finishes also perform well in these settings, although they might show more wear over time. Polished finishes may not be the best option in high-traffic areas due to their tendency to scratch and become slippery.

Absolutely! Using a combination of polished, honed, and flamed basalt finishes can create a visually interesting design while optimizing functionality. For example, you might use polished tiles in a living area for elegance, honed tiles in bathrooms for improved slip resistance, and flamed tiles for outdoor patios to enhance safety and durability. This mix can help balance aesthetics and practicality throughout your space.
